Schwinn was founded in 1895 and quickly became an American Icon, producing classic bikes that formed the cultural icons of the 1970’s and 80’s. Following a decline in sales through the 90’s they declared bankruptcy and were bought out by Pacific Bikes, and then Dorcel Industries.
The Schwinn Stingray:
The most famous Schwinn Bike is the Stingray.
In the early 1960’s there was a revolution in bikes taking place in california. Kids were chopping up bikes and making them look like lowride motorbikes. Large rear wheels, ape hanger handlebars, and big banana seats.
With these design cues, Al Fritz the main designer sought to replicate this style, and came up with the “Stingray” creating the first Chopper bike. An easy rider bike, big handle bars, a three speed shifter mounted on a huge “gear stick” on the frame, a small 20″ front wheel. An Icon was born.
Sadly sales were slow to take off, parents were reserved about buying them for their children. But as soon as they started to appear on the streets, and this was in the days when children played on the streets, sales of the Schwinn Stingray took off.
Now all Schwinn branded bikes are built in China, where they make good quality bikes at low cost, fuelling growth in the last decade.
Developing a strategy for all riders Schwinn has streamlined its range into two Tiers: a standard range and a premium range.
The Standard range is a large selection of “Mass Market” bikes offered through outlets such as Amazon, and Big Box stores. The premium range is limited to local bike shops, and are not available through the big multiple retailers.
