If you are looking to keep your fitness up, and can’t escape the house either due to time or weather then a set of indoor rollers are just the thing to keep your legs turning.
You can continue to train on your favorite bike, no modifications are required, and the simple device will keep you upright and steady for the length of your workout.
What makes these Rollers Special?
Nashbar have introduced a parabolic shape to these rollers, effectively the rollers are shaped to keep your wheels in the middle of the roller. The advantage of this for you is that now you can concentrate of putting all the power through the pedals without worrying about the bike slipping from side to side. This provides a much more comfortable workout, and can improve the amount of cardio work performed.
How easy are they to set up?
All the parts are included in the box. There is a simple set up guide provided, and you should be up and running in about 30 minutes. The rollers will need to be set up on a hard surface. If you have a carpet then there is a risk that the legs could “sink” into the pile. This will allow the rollers to touch the carpet. All that’s needed is a mat or a flat piece of wood to support the frame.
Should I not just buy a trainer?
If you are considering indoor bike training then there are a number of options, the main two being a trainer, where just the back wheel turns and the bike is held up in small a frame. With a trainer there is no need to balance the bike as its clamped in.
With rollers, the bike is sitting on the rollers and power through the rear wheel transfers to the front wheel through a strong band. This keeps both wheels rotating at the same time. With the rollers though the rider needs to balance on the bike, with stability coming from the gyroscopic effect of the wheels turning.
The advantage of the rollers is that you will learn to balance on the bike at the same time as exercising. However care must be taken, as its much easier to fall off the rollers than off a trainer.
Another big advantage of the roller is that you can ride any bike on it, they are adjustable to fit most adult bikes. There is no need, for example, to fit a special hub.
As you put energy into the system it can only come out in a number of ways, heat, motion and sound. The level of the noise will depend on the type of tires on your bike. Slicks will be very quiet, where as you will definitely here the knobbly MTB tires.
Will my bike fit?
This roller accommodates bikes from 37″ – 42″ wheel bases, which should cover most adult bike sizes.
