Who is the Dahon Speed P8 for?
Sitting in the Urban Performance range of bikes from Dahon, the Speed P8 is one of the mid range Dahons designed to give great performance at a reasonable price. As the name suggests the P8 ships with eight gears, giving optimal flexibility to select the best speed.
Sharing the same frame as the Speed Bike, this P8 comes fitted with higher end components, such as the Schwalbe Big Apple tires, and variable handlebars. The bike comes in three colours, black, white and red.
Lets look at some of the features in more depth.
The Drive Train:
With eight gears on tap, this has the potential to be a fast bike from Dahon. The slick gear change comes curtosy of the grip shifter on the handle bars. Turn the handle away for lower gears and towards you for the higher gears. This gives a satisfying change, but can be a little clunky.
In the Saddle:
This is not a road bike, the riding position is very different. You will soon get used to the more upright style of riding, and appreciate the better view of the traffic. And of course sitting up makes it easier for cars to see you to!
If you have come from mountain bikes, you will find the handle bars quite close together, and the stem might feel quite close. This is the price of being able to fold it down to such a compact size.
Overall the bike is comfortable, with a good saddle. Riders of 5’4″ to 6’00” should have no issues riding this bike. Dahon state the weight limit for the rider is 200lb.
The seat post features handy markings to allow the height to be quickly set when unfolding the bike, this means that you can easily select the right height without having to guess where you would like it.
The bike does not ship with many accessories, if you want front and rear mud guards they have to be ordered separately, same with a rack.
However there is a kick stand fitted as standard, which will allow you to keep the bike of the ground when not in use.
What are others saying?
“This is a very reliable bike. ”
“Light, portable, fits in your trunk. ”
“Best bike ever!”
If you are in the market for a folding bike, maybe to speed up your morning commute then the Speed P8 from Dahon would make an excellent choice. With the Dahon quality you are buying a very strong bike that will give years of great service. With the extra gears the bike will be fast and fun to ride. The only real downside is dealing with the jealous looks of the other riders.
